Axe is right (I feel dizzy)
Here in UK we also hear a lot of this "It costs too much to provide a rural bus/rail/library/school bus/telephone/post office/bank/petrol station" etc etc ... it is very often a load of old ***** but sadly, the inevitable next step is that the "too expensive" service is axed (!).

There is a brief flurry of local newspaper coverage, 2 paragraph interviews with affected kids/parents/commuters etc, and then the service terminates and the affected communities are left forever the poorer as regards their quality of life, while the monied corporations who have just pulled the rug are free to direct their energies where they really wanted to put them all the time - not in providing a quality service for all, and for the better of the community, but at making the maximum possible profit for the minimum investment of time, money, effort or quality. Evidently the excuses are global - perhaps it's the tip of a vastly ill-conceived scheme to deprive rural regions of so many creature comforts that the disenchanted populace will be driven to move to the nearest big town or city, where they can be wired into the 24 hour consumer-fest that is the life-force of all profit-driven corporate entities.

Another sad reflection and indicator of the extent to which daily life is "owned" by for-profit, faceless corporations.
