I also have been in Data Processing or IT as they now call it for over 35 years. I have experienced the same disappointments and setbacks.

IMHO, I feel that the most important thing missing today is basic programming and system arhitecture skills!!!

How many MCSE's have I met that do not even understand the basics of programming and yet are called upon to resolve problems...Or better yet admit that they have never programmed and want to write scripts! (How many of these scripts are horrendeous to read and debug? -- of course there are no comments!)

Without these skills one cannot even discuss or comprehend a system/application deficiency that should be a part of programming 101 or CS 101 or OS 101. Since these skills are lacking it's no wonder we have so many exposures and failures.

My bigggest fear when I started in this industry was that managers would not have a basic understanding of computers, systems or processes. Unfortunately my biggest fear has come true.

However, there exists and will always exist a small group of individuals that hold programming and systems architecture together. They are our unsung heroes. The Open Source movement is where you will find the vast majority of them.
