I don't need no stinking badge!
I have an MS in Computer Science from a well known university. I have 34 years experience as an engineer - the last 20 years as a software engineer. I have worked in both commercial and military contract companies, mostly in data communications, machine control and 3D digital imagery. I have always come through for my employer. I have always succeeded at what I was asked to do. Yet, I have had projects canceled, been greeted by the Sheriff and a couple of suits at the door coming in to work, had a paycheck bounce because the company was broke and once had a company just give up and quit.

All the certifications in the world would not have saved one of these disasters. It was bad planning by higher-ups, totally insufficient resources, unrealistic expectations by the customer and my bosses. And yes, more than once I have spoken up, which fell on deaf ears.

When marketeers, sales people and customers actually listen to what the engineers have to say about what it will take to satisfy a requirement, there will be far fewer failures.
