Humming?
I have CFL's throughout my home as well as at work. Although my hearing may not be that good, I have never heard them hum nor have I heard anyone complain about it.

As for the environmental concerns of temperature and humidity, not as big a deal as you would like to believe. CFL's are no more affected than incandescents plus, unlike incandescent bulbs, CFL's are not prone to failure due to heat.

Uh, you must not be from California. Just about the entire state has a dedicated recycling program and recycling centers are easy to find. We have places for old computers, florescent lights and many other recyclable items. Ironically the hippie state of stoners and surfers is the leader in the United States when it comes to green technology and recyclable materials.
