The irony over the iPhone name
as far as Apple is concerned is that it was "bestowed" on a potential/rumoured
Apple phone by tech writers, rumour sites, bloggers, etc.

It seemed a logical name choice given all the other Apple i-branded items... iMac,
iLife (iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, iTunes, iWeb), iPod, etc yet Apple had always denied
(or given a "no comment") concerning a phone.

It's the public and media that started using the likely "iPhone" label for the
imagined product, not Apple.
