Pleas allow me to clarify.
I do not think that just because something isn't tangible doesn't mean it can't be stolen. Nor that copying material that you don't have the rights to is legal, note I refer to it as illegal copying, which it is. I am very familiar with both sides of the Intellectual Property issues and the problems that exist in the current system. I find it sad that even the concept of Fair Use is so seldom understood anymore.
It is my hope that the failing systems can be reformed so that the content producers/creators and the content consumers can both benefit. The current system favors the content brokers and rights owners at the expense of the content consumer and the content producers/creators.
I think that comparing illegal copying to stealing a solid object from a store is ridiculous. Who has stolen from a store? Not many people would do that because of their morals. Now look at who has recorded a show or movie on vhs, copied a song on tape from the radio, or downloaded an mp3 or avi for their own personal viewing/listening. Almost everyone has done this at least once in their lifetime. Is this the same as stealing from a store or stealing someone's identity? HA. so extreme...
Copying in of itself is neither illegal nor immoral, that is what the companies themselves do for money remember. Sure copying something for your own viewing is currently a crime under the digital millennium copyright act, but in all fairness to those who do it, it is more like jaywalking on an empty street then holding up the local quick-mart. Lets keep it in perspective. Maybe a fine is appropriate at best for bad cases? The real pirates are copying and selling illegal copies in large quantity and they are the only real criminals, everyone else is just a minor, minor, infraction at best IMHO. Also, just because it isn't legal to copy something that is copyrighted, doesn't mean that it is stealing to do it. There are lots of laws you can break that aren't stealing. I disagree with blind assumption that it is stealing. I do think it is unauthorized duplication. But how can they squeeze consumers with that?
I think there should be content protection laws, I just think they should be fair, balanced, in perspective, and serve the greater good. I don't think they should just stuff the pockets of the few at the expense of the greater good. - Posted by: jjarman Posted on: 01/26/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
