COBOL
in the sixties (Yup kids there were computers even then) the mainframers brought forth a Common Business Oriented Language that would allow the normal user to specify how the data was to be processed and obviate the need for those pesky programmers. It created a class of programmers with a new programming language.

Yet again we get to draw pretty pictures and everything will be well in IT Land. Meanwhile the folks who are being beat up by the EU are focusing their energies on getting an insanely great development environment for programmers (unless you are a Redmond hater). May the games begin, but my money is on history repeating itself.
