I will agree that we do give up a little privacy by allowing store owners to us cameras. I am willing to make this sacrifice because the store owners are trying to protect their property, but if the government were to start requiring the stores to retain that video. I would flip. The government is welcome to request a warrant for information that business owners have kept for their internal use (billing records, video surveillance, what have you) but the government does not have the right to mandate that certain information be gathered or retained for government use. Example, UPS/FedEx keeps delivery records for their own use, even customer use and with a proper warrant the government can access this information but they should not be able to require that this information be kept or for how long and they definitely should not be able to discover the contents of my package years after it has been delivered. Do you think the US Postal Service keeps a record of the 100+ pieces of junk mail that are delivered to me each day? Should they have too? Would it be right if they were required too?
