so why would this be a problem?
OK. Lets give you a good example. How 'bout HDTV? The feds wanted to free up the "free" broadcast bands to re-sell (license) those frequencies to other uses, which would generate a lot of revenue in the coffers. To do it they took an Idea that using "digital" signals would offer us the clarity and sound that we needed to have beamed into our homes-(HDTV), and they tell the public that, to do this, they HAD to eliminate our regular broadcast chanels. You have to buy new equipment to get the new chanels, and the broadcasters (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS etc) would have until a certain date to A: get the equipment to offer HDTV and implement it, And B: shut down their old outdated stations' offerings.
Meanwhile, WE aren't told ANY of this until the laws are on the books, and RCA is working on the HDTV format. The law that started all of this? It was passed back in the early 1980s, and only a handfull of industry people knew about it. They THOUGHT the promise of "better TV viewing" would be enough to sway us into going along with it A LITTLE AT A TIME!! (roughly 20yrs?)
My point! IF you want to still hand over YOUR rights to the FEDS, do nothing. IF you DON'T want "big brother" watching you, stand and fight. You say "well if it helps catch child preditors, I don't think I really mind", but what about the poor sap that, unbeknownst to him, the preditors have taken control of his pc and zombied his system to place the porn on? He doesn't have a clue that the stuff is there, 'cause he don't know enough about a computer to realize it? The feds collect the info, and BAM this poor guys' IPS shows up as a preditor site, and he's up the creek w/o a boat! No, I don't think making an ISP responsible to help catch bad guys is the answer. There is too many people in jail right now, that aren't guilty of the crimes they were accused of, and when it come to *&%$&@# DA's pressing charges when there souldn't be any (ie MIKE NIFONG in the Duke Lacrosse case!), they don't care about YOU if it gets THEM political points to keep their jobs! No, I see too many chances for abuses, so start fighting it now, BEFORE it becomes law, and costs YOU money. (cause I as an ISP provider WILL pass the costs on to YOU!)
