cybercrime
Hmmm I have to point out that the most spam and phishing practices are originated in the USA. Not that that means I'm ok with the data retention but spam and phishing is a cyber crime and it's a big problem. What I don't get is that those spammers seem to be able to work undisturbed and data retention isn't really going to stop them. So you are right if you say it's an irrelevant practice.

It's strange though how most people would find it outrageous if their mail was to be read, but it doesn't bother them knowing people can read their e-mail. Mostly they answer 'I have nothing to hide in my e-mail'. While that might be true, it's not the point, the point is privacy. Isn't it strange that a government demands easy access to digital data it would need tons of approvals for the old fashioned way? Is data less personal when it's digital? Don't they need a warrant and make you aware of that they have one to search your digital 'property'? What data will they be able to log and what not and how will they deal with it and most important: who?

PS: the "most free country in the world" is up for discussion. I bet many would disagree on that claim.
