Lots of casual programmers in the scientific community learned Fortran, then BASIC (no problem if you knew Fortran), but have never had the time, inclination, nor need to grasp more modern languages. I know people who don't write more than 50 lines of code in a year, but for them, Fortran is like riding a bicycle, even though they were never "professional" programmers.

What the article doesn't explain though (at least not clearly) is whether Fortress intends to be backward compatible with Fortran. If it's truly aiming to replace Fortran, it needs to allow existing Fortran to run, even if it supplies additional functionality or syntax to allow Fortran code to be updated for efficiency.
