Look to the past for the answer.
One could have said the same thing about the US phone system. There was no "switched network", operators made manual connections for every phone call. As that became too much they switched to having several people on a "party line" where you had a special ring that told you when to pick up the phone. (Social engineering?) But, as the demand grew, so did the technology to support what was being asked of it.

There are dozen's of exmaples though out history and all of them point to the same thing. People WILL do what it takes to make the system(s) work when there is enough demand...
