Don't agree with you Loverock!

Lovey,

For a prolific poster you do not seem to have a very good grip on the world of
marketing or consumer electronics.

Apple's product will do well for a number of reasons.

1. Image.

A large proportion of the people who buy Apple products do it primarily because
they want to be associated with the Apple brand, and the specific ideals that it
portrays. These include but are not limited to, individuality (which may be
considered ironic) and innovation. As such, Apple customers tend to be an
extremely loyal bunch. They also tend to be a fashion conscious lot as well, and as
such like to have the latest gadgets.

2. Ephemeral Nature of Consumer Products.

Yes, you are correct. Most people of a certain demographic do already own a
mobile phone and an mp3 player. But have you ever noticed how those pesky little
products just don't last for ever, get lost, stolen, eaten by the family dog? As such
people who already own these products will sooner than later need to buy another
one.


3. New Markets

Then there are those who are moving into the target market. The simplest
example being those coming of age into that demographic, ie, the kids of today,
the customers of tomorrow. Once again, a market who are extremely image
conscious.

4. Product

I, like you mentioned, already own a mobile phone and an mp3 player, both of
which I choose to carry around with me everywhere. The simple fact that I could
have the convenience of carrying only one item as opposed to two is a huge
selling point. Your arguement, 'No one uses there phone to play mp3's' is in fact a
positive statement for Apple, suggesting there currently isn't an effective product
on the market fulfilling this need.

Only time will tell in regards to the success of the 'iPhone' but I would suggest (as
supported by the substantial rise in Apple's stock price yesterday) that Apple will
be smiling at the end of the day.
