Microsoft is afraid of competition, so they make all kinds of excuses as to why the competition's ideas won't work. As for the points Lovey has tried to make...

"They know nothing of making phones"... And what exactly did Microsoft know of making console game systems before jumping into the XBox? What did Apple know about portable media players before jumping into the iPod?

"Everyone has an mp3 player"... And almost as many have an iPod. If you find this confusing, read the next point...

"Most phones can now play mp3s and video wo where is the market they are looking for?"... How about the millions of iTunes subscribers. Most that I know of don't particularly like having to convert the songs they've downloaded over the last few years to mp3 format. I can't say as I blame them, especially since I've seen a few who had literally thousands of songs they'd have to convert.

"I'll stick with my enV which does voice, data, music, video and has a keyboard"... I'd guess the iPod phone will be able to do everything your enV does minus the keyboard. A keyboard that small is pretty much useless anyway. A writing surface and stylus would be much more usable.

Now let's look at the reality of the market today. Components are getting smaller and smaller, cheaper and cheaper. It takes very little to take a phone and add multi-media capabilities. At the same time, it takes very little to take a multi-media device and add phone capabilities. It's become obvious that the marketplace is looking for devices that provide as much functionality as possible into as small of a footprint as possible. All hardware companies recognize this. If Apple were to ignore the marketplace and go their own way as they have in the past, people would be complaining that they weren't listening to their customers. When they listen to customers, they get folks like Lovey complaining. While I've never been a fan of hardware companies trying to sell software or software companies trying to sell hardware, I have always been a fan of companies who listen to their customer base. Leveraging their iPod market presence is a pretty smart business move, even for Apple.
