It's already reality
Just look at Windows 2003. NOTHING is installed by default. If you install IIS, no features are installed, you have to choose things like FTP or HTTP services. If you choose HTTP, no sample scripts or anything else like .asp support is installed by default. If you choose SMTP, relay and connectivity is disabled by default.

Even IE is locked down, you can?t even surf the web unless you manually enable each site you visit. I would have to say that Windows 2003 is the most locked down by default OS of any vendor ever.

Windows XP SP2 will have Internet Connection Firewall on by default. This will be a massive seismic change on the Internet. Be prepared to see half of the Internet disappear in terms of ICMP echoes. Even if your typical user never applies Critical updates, they will have a hard stateful packet inspection shell around them to even guard against neighboring computers on the LAN. No other OS includes a functional firewall let alone a Stateful inspection firewall.

Microsoft is like the restaurant that got caught and badly embarrassed with rotten meat, they?re quickly forced to become the cleanest restaurant in town.
