.NET--What IE was to the Windows API
We've seen it all before. The competition this time could come in the form of web services that leap the Win32 applications barrier to entry.

Solution: Deep six the Win32 API. Previously, when the Internet's HTML and upstarts Netscape and Java threatend to create a platform that could commoditize Windows, MS stuffu\ed core Windows functionality into IE, forcing users and developers to adopt IE over Netscape and ensuring Windows ubiquity even if the Internet took off.

Now the Long Horn is being rolled out to head off the threat from web services and the antitrust trial settlement. The all-new .NET is clearly meant as a new model not covered by any settlement agreement.

As for the reason for the long advance notice we have on all this--it's again more of the same--preannouncing a product years in advance in order to prevent competititors from even bothering to enter the market.

I'm more concerned about the dearth of revised and new apps for extant Windows versions; the Long Long Horn approach seems to have caused many software firms to virtually give up on Windows Long before the end has really come.

Presumably these folks understand the coded meaning of the Long-range preannouncing of Longhorn--get out while the going is good or face the Long Horn in a couple of years.
