Story says the dude regularly checks in with co-workers and family. If he called a hotel just to let them know he'd be late, he'd probably call about the appointment he missed on Tuesday.
And it is not unreasonable for people to worry about a co-worker. I didn't show up for work one day and didn't call in and by noon someone from work came by my house to make sure I was still alive.
