For Profit
There was an article on this site that said hackers have moved from being nuisance just to show off thier skill to using thier skill to illegally gain money. They do this via zombie networks sending SPAM, encrypting company files and exorting them, or just pure threats of abusing a hole if they don't pay.

I think hackers have realized there is money to be had.

I know for a fact that the Oil and Gas industry pays hackers to hack the competition. They even go as far as to have people hired to spy on oil field employees and consultants where they follow you around and go through any garbage you might throught. Leave a laptop laying around and it will go missing really quick. It's nasty and they all play dirty. Big money for skilled hacker since knows he won't get caught as these Oil companies don't report being hacked to the police. They don't want police scrutinizing thier operations too closely.
