What/Who are you saving?
"let's drive up energy prices, put thousands out of work and trash the American economy because environmentalists are predicting disaster."

Subsidized at first/government backed renewable energy and conservation efforts will put a lot more americans back to work than the alternative of the status quo..

Current NEOCON objectives increasing levels of CO2 emissions, higher levels of offshoring, terrorism, and activities requiring the support of an ever larger military industrial complex (Iraq, bases aroud the world, US Navy to protect sea lanes, etc), and the ultimate (DO NOTHING) probable extinction of mammals on the planet Earth.

===

As depletion run's it course, non-renewable energy sources will pay back less and less Energy Return On Energy Invested. (EROEI)

(ERORI for current tech.)
Coal ~2.5 to 1
Oil ~4 to 1 (or less)
Nuclear 6.5 to 1.

(Note: Oil in ground to useful work @ wheels of a vehicle power by an ICE?? You really don't want to know, it's pitiful.)

Meanwhile..

Solar thermal + recycling@EOL >500 to 1.
Properly sighted, Solar PV + recycling@EOL >100 to 1
Properly sighted, Wind + recycling@EOL >100 to 1.

===

"After all these the same folks "
The simple answer.. NO.. not even close..

Newspapers (non-scientists) where the ones briefly harping (speculating) about global cooling.

Scientists have been predicting this event dating back to the 1850's.. (Discovery of CO2's absorption spectra and atmospheric concentration.)
The UN's IPCC has been studying this issue since 1988.

As for population, GW will eventually take care of that. In 2006, A widescale drought plus desert like high temps inflicted widespread crop damage.
(That was just a little taste of a GW future.)

Lastly in the GW context. Do nothing/Don't Destroy/Preserve whatever "the economy" (status quo) is another restatement for the term "Global Suicide Pack".
