The answer is obvious...
.. or at least it should be.

Surely an invention is a device or technique or other method which is NEW and has never been seen before.

An innovation is an adaptation of an already existing idea or a combination of ideas. It adapts an existing method or device.

Of course there is the question of algorithms are they invented or discovered? I'd go for discovery myself particulary as they seem to be rediscovered on a regular basis whether or not somebody has written them down and patented it.

The trouble with all this though is that the big companies are insecure enough to want to own everything to ensure fat salaries and fat shareholder payouts. The only shares for them are the shareholders percentages.
