I would say yes...
"Kids also play with swords and plastic guns. Should they also be forbidden?"

These are weapons of death and conquest. Allowing a child to use them is only programming them to accept their real counter-parts being use. It also teaches them that they are toys. Many shootings of children are not driven by malice but by ignorance. One of the factors is children see guns and swords used in TV the villain dies only to come back in another episode. Children will emulate what they see.

So if they are using the plastic toys to reproduce the acts of violence on TV they are being desensitized. Next thing you know some careless parent has left his/her handgun where a child can get it. The association of play is made and another child dies. Although death by hand guns is actually quite small in this nation, it is one of the most preventable accidents around.

Now I am not against gun ownership. I have several myself. But I also do not allow my child to play with guns. They are not toys and should never be thought of as toys. And by allowing a child to play with them is inviting reckless behavior (possibly) in the future.

Now if you want to take a child out and TEACH then how to PROPERLY use a gun AND reinforce that they ARE NOT TOYS! Then by all means do! My 9 year old daughter is turning out to be quite a marksman with the .22 cal pistol and rifle. But then she also knows that she is never to touch a gun without an adult present and that they are not toys to be pointed at anyone at anytime. I will teach her personal defense when she is 14 and capable of at least having a base understanding of the finality of actions.

And for credential sake (I know someone will reply in negative to this...)
