What you seem to forget is that history
has never had a phenomenon like MS. A software product that became so widespread and so widely used by many different factions of end users. No matter how they go there, it is an ENORMOUS challenge to maintain a system that supplies everyone and so many large companies esp. since it is highly configurable and programmable. If MS did anythting wrong it was making a system that was closed yet so flexible to start with. This is what is causing them grief now. YOu look at any system out there that is designed for a certain market along. Take healthcare. I've worked with one of the top 3 systems in the world. It's backend engine is 1960s technology from MIT. It is slow to change cause they have a such a huge client base around the world. But as they add more and more functionality, it does everyhing from registrations to scheduling to OR and ER modules, ordering, LAB, Pharmacy, Nursing to patient accounting and fiscal apps which number over 12. It's a huge integrated system that is functions as one system but satisfies many. It takes a ton of work to keep i8t patched. It is just the nature of that kind of beast, no matter who writes it. MS has great programmers. You can't have such a large integrated system w/o those kinds of problems they get ripped for...don't you see the millions of issues they have to reconcile just for a patch release? But on the other hand this kind of system is easy to use, deploy and maintain. IT generalists can do it. It's very powerful in so many ways and provides much business worth. I think that all outweighs the problems. Just mho.
