- There are about 7 million lines of code in the Linux OS...
-
...I just wc-ed the source. Of that, maybe 160 thousand are "new" since the last release.
That, right off the top, is a big advantage for the Linux OS: it's relatively small. And, unlike Windows, it's highly evolutionary: instead of huge, earth-shaking, bug-inducing, new releases every, what?, five or six years, it just sort of oozes along with a series of bite-sized changes--a lot easier to test. It also means a lot less duct tape and bailing wire--new or enhanced function can be properly integrated with the rest of the OS rather than just thumb-tacked on. (A process made easier by modularity--changing the OS usually doesn't require a change in userland apps like browsers and media players, none of which are included in that 7 million lines. And if it does require a change, the older behaviour can be kept and modularised until apps no longer need it, at which time it can be dropped.)
That's how we get Linux to work.
