Google is gold standard...for now.
Right now, Google may even be undervalued. But, I speculate that paying for earnings ten years from now is just a little risky. Google's PE ratio is reflective of a truly golden, continuing rapid growth future; no, or little competition, continuing visionary management whose eyesight continues to improve, and much more.
I love what they have done to realize - translate monetize- their expertise and technology. But a small voice in my head says "when?" When will all the great things of today, and maybe the next two or three years, get a second look by investors, analysts, vendors, employees, potential competitors, regulators, politicians?
Is there a new google out there? Will AT&T or Verizon or Comcast or NBC or...or...come up with a "plan?" How about those frontiers of tech in India? China? Russia - the best hackers and phishers around.
It is one thing to reasonably pay for prospective gorwth, even at high prices and with decidely optimistic business models, but what about the competition? If there is anything I am sure of it is that success begets competitors; big and small, nibbling at the edges, the niches. And occasionally, along comes a new shark, ready to take a big bite, and you can't buy or minimize them all.
Maybe I'm too pragmatic; maybe Sergei and company are the new Microsoft, monopolizing their market segment, using their tech to keep out competitors...but I don't think so.
It's just a matter of when.
