Leading the sheep to the slaughter....
I see the same exact thing happening that happened in the dot com boom/bust. With the introduction of internet stock trading, everyday people were able to invest in stocks with the click of a mouse. They heard things like "Yahoo is the next Microsoft" (right before the 95% stock dive), "How can you lose with Pets.com", "Webvan.com will take over the grocery business", "Enron is unstoppable". One of my friends even said "soon you'll have to buy everything on the internet". I know everyday people who made enough to buy half a house (in 2000) and I know people who lost enough to buy a large Mercedes (even today). Essentially it was gambling. Gambling they could make money, before everyone else bails out of the stock, and they lose their shirts. It's paper money, money made because of people's gut greed; and they're taking a chance. Maybe it pays off, maybe it doesn't.

Now I like Google; however while everyone touts the new Google "products" (and I use them too), I don't see any real progress being made; no real barrier preventing the next great search engine from just smacking it down.
Google made it's name on search, and now advertising, however with that distinction, it's now got a big fat bullseye on it's back.

Meanwhile all the professional stock analysts are pretty much saying what they said in the dot com era. Buy!, Buy!!, Buy!!!... without mentioning, because we're making money off it. The real professionals really aren't gambling. They have up to the second news, well before everyday normal people, and are able to make trades on that news in an instant. They can make money on stocks regardless of if they go up or down, as long as the stocks move.

Who would imagine that Google would be up to $500/share so soon? not me, I figured people learned their lesson. I guess greed dulls those memories.
