Caution, strawman attacking innocent bystanders in this area!!!
"Kind of hard to do that if you had no browser or FTP client bundled."

FTP has been bundled with Windows since W95. It's part of the TCP/IP installation. For that matter I used to download new versions of IE (Starting with 3.01 IIRC) using Lynx so that I could do in-house testing of it behind the company firewall when I supported Netscape for use by Merrill Lynch customers using a browser to access their accounts securely over the Internet seven years ago. Customers always wanted to know why they couldn't use IE to access their account info. When I found out why it wouldn't work and how often it crashed, a problem it has long since overcome, and told them, they were still unhappy because it wasn't what they wanted to hear. They, like you, wanted to believe that they couldn't do without it. You could then and you can now.

IE _is_ a much better product now than it was in those days. [Especially if you write trojans or malware.] Netscape lags behind in areas like ActiveX controls but is head and shoulder above in standards compliance.

What do I use? Epiphany 1.0.1. It's not a world beater, but it does just what I want (and doesn't do what I don't want it to) and is getting noticeably better with each new release. But it's no IE.
