That only works some of the times, where materials are not needed in the developemnt. Software codeing does not require the purchasing of tooling and manufacturing equipment, material and testing costs. It can be done in a closet on a 499.99 laptop.

If a person spends much of their own money (as many entrepreneurs do) on a new way to do something they must be allowed to protect the idea, otherwise, innovation would stagenate,

Who can afford to spend thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars on an idea, only to have the idea snatched up by some startup company and used to upgrade their existing products?

Patents are are great idea, but if used for a product or process. Patents should NEVER have been allowed to cover a "method".
