There is LESS vigorous competition every day
When there is competition, consumers have leverage in that they can take their business to a competitor if they don't like the practices of their current provider.
As you know, AT&T has been very busy reassembling the Bell empire of old. AT&T is getting ready to swallow Bell South, just as it consumed Ameritech and SBC over the last few years. You can be sure that they will attempt to merge with Verizon in the next two years. With a single telephone company in the US, there will be a little less competition, right?

But what about Vonage and getting my telephone service from my cable provider? That problem is easily solve with the end of "net nutrality". Once the phone company routinely examines all the packets that flow over their Internet back bone, Vonage, Skype and other VOIP packets will end up in the internet slow lane (or maybe in the ditch along side the slow lane) - those services will offer such low quality as to be unusable.

Vigorous competition? Don't count on it.
