A covenant not to sue basically amounts to a barter agreement that results in an exchange of IP without threat of retaliation from either side. And SuSE Linux just happens to be covered under that tent. As far as other Linux distros are concerned, this really changes nothing. Sure Ballmer is beating the drum about potential infringement, but he has been doing that for a long time now. The only change now is that SuSE Linux is free from MS IP claims. It IS NOT free from claims by other major software vendors, of which there are many, nor is it free from the claims of patent trolls. So this is simply not as big a deal as it is made out to be. The real news here is that MS is finally coming to grips with Linux as a technology and accepting the fact that it is not going to go away soon. So they can rattle their sabors at Red Hat and others all they want. Big deal. Thats what competitors do all the time.
