Not even speculation...
... about Novell paying patent royalties to Microsoft. I think this article implicitly confirms that Microsoft said there will be no patent problem for SuSE, and not because Novell is paying Microsoft.

A gesture to one company which also has the implication that other companies might be violating Microsoft's IP.
As noted in the article, Microsoft does not have to take further action to raise the issue.

From another article, Novell contacted Microsoft and negotiations began in April. That makes it unlikely that Novell was especially concerned about IP.
Probably arose as an easy assist to SuSE.
