So make privacy lemonade already
Why the fuss, Google could make a few changes to GMail and it could score a slap down against MS Hotmail and Yahoo.

The scanning of emails for advertising keywords is no different from scanning for Spam 'Vi@gra' keywords. So all they have to do is reassure users there's nothing sinister there.

The "doesn't always delete immediately" thing is the same as most email database engines and hard disks. So Google could promise that the data is wiped within X days (whatever interval is needed to do a cleanup) and that would fix that.

Where Google can score real points is in the privacy itself. They could hold users data local to the user. So Europeans log in, to servers in Europe subject to European jurisdiction, US users in the US and so on.

They could promise privacy at the EU Levels for everyone, including US Citizens. i.e. private data kept private, no selling of info, no selling of email addresses/preferences/social data anonymized or otherwise. Data not released without due process, etc.

Since both Microsoft & Yahoo are members of the "online privacy alliance" ( ttp://www.privacyalliance.org/ )- a lobby group that argues *against* US privacy laws. They would be sitting ducks if Google made GMail not just the biggest but the most private.
