Apples to Gold Plated Apples
You can't really compare the base Accord with manual windows and manual transmission to the Accord Hybrid with full leather, NAV, and every other bell and whistle. If you compare carefully, you'll find a number of hybrids that compare very favorably. Take, for example, the Camry Hybrid. It comes in at roughly $1600 more than a similar XLE model, according to an analysis I have seen. And Toyota wants to drive the hybrid premium down so that it's an option more like an automatic tranmission or A/C. Look, none of these solutions will be as economically feasible at the beginning. One must focus on which can be truly viable in, say, 5 to 10 years. Thy hybrid equation will look much more favorable once Toyota has built its millionth one! Add in battery improvements coming in about two years and we'll see the hybrid premium drop to around $1000 on MANY models with no huge trade-off in available trunk space. If we do NOTHING while we wait for the perfect solution, your great grandkids will still be talking about this topic, perhaps in Chinese. But that's another debate.
