Where this really gets interesting...
Yes, I get the concept behind the Xbox, sell the consoles at a loss, eventually build up enough users that you start to profit from game sales. Five years since the Xbox first came out, still no hope of profits for at least another 2 years (other than the one quarter when Halo 2 came out)? What other company could invest that much money and then continue to lose that much money for seven years before ever hoping to turn a profit?

Where this really gets interesting is the Zune. MS is going to lose around $50 on every Zune sold. Unlike the Xbox games, there's not a huge profit to be made from selling songs--just ask Apple which only does a little better than breaking even on the wildly successful iTunes store. How many years of losses will MS put up with for Zune? How much longer will it take to turn a profit, given the enormous difference in profit turned from media sales that favors the Xbox?
