Sybase is Microsft SQL Server 6.5
Sybase is now available in a low or no cost version and this is interesting to one of my small shops because we still operate a big chunk of business there on an unsupported by Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 machine.

Apparently ubgrading to any other flavor of Microsoft SQL Server requires rewriting the entire application including stored procedures. I am currently looking for tools that translate 6.5 stored procedures to SQL 2005 stored procedures. Any possibility of that being in Windows SQL Server 2005?

Ah shucks, Microsoft could be doing its customers so much more. Why the hell don't they? Why not deal with the very real desire of its customers to stay with Crystal Reports? Certainly the revenues are there to cut a deal with the owner of Crystal Reports and provide the continuity in tools expected. If ever there were proof of continued abuse of monopoly power it is seen in the recent revenues of Microsoft. Without monopoly power the company would be not only supportig Crystal Reports but also Microsoft Access. Boy those folks got the shaft.

MicroSoft released SQL Server 6.5 in 1996 using Sybase code as its base. Some consider SQL Server 6.5 to be the best Microsoft has ever done in the data base space. Of course that is before they realize it was really Sybase. Then if they are loyalists SQL Server 6.5 becomes dog pile. This in an industry that managers use to put the politically clewless into. CA, Microsoft, Oracle & Sybase all offere free or low cost versions of their database products. I suppose that is owning to MySQL. Application developers shouldn't have to care. It really should be just a JDBC driver thing.
