The server unit is seeing growth as a direct result of the
windows desktop monopoly and the continued refusal of MS to
publish the interoperability information for the workgroup
protocols. It is a perfect example of the continuing leveraging of
Win32 profits in other areas.

Samba is getting on top of the important workgroup protocols
and though years behind will have effectively caught up in v4 -
bring it to AD status. It is the work of the Samba team that is
giving MS the most competition.

However if you want to hurt MS, and yes some of us would like
to see this happen, WINE is the only project with potential to
break the Win32 API barrier and give access to the desktop
monopoly. Mono will for managed code but this is very rare
today - not even used by MS.

IBM must have some residual IP from OS2 they could back WINE
with.
