Here are some things for you
mjtmjh@yahoo.com if you are serious please drop me a line, I will be more than happy to assist where I can.

Try this first: http://knopix.com/ I have never used it but I have read and been told by those that have it's an excellent tool to give you the Linux experience without installing Linux. You run it from a CDROM. Now worries about partitioning or installing or resizing your Windows partition.

If you really want to try Linux out, then I would recommend Mandrake Linux to start with. It's the most user friendly for installation and set-up. It also comes with a lot of software. To actually try a Linux system without disturbing your Windows partition I would recommend the following:

1 - Buy a removable hard drive bay (this is how I started in 1999)
2 - Buy a 10GB hard drive (you can find them for like $30.00)

Use the drive bay to switch hard drives. So when you want to try Linux and work with it you can without having to partition. Unless you are glutton for punishment and want to deal with partitioning. You can also just get the 10GB hard drive and slave it into your system then install Linux and it's boot loader to create a dual boot system. It all depends on how you want to learn the system.

Some people will build or buy a new system just for Linux so they can have the two systems side by side.

Personally I use SuSE 9.0 Professional, so I can get all the developing tools and additional software that is not available with the personal edition. Not knowing your requirements, I would recommend personal editions. Oh one more thing, you can buy the CD's from the distributors or if you have a Fry's near you they carry Linux Mandrake and SuSE along with Red Hat. (note stay away from Red-Hat... just my personal opinion, SuSE is a much better set-up for tools and ease of use) Or you can, if you have high speed internet, download and burn the ISO images yourself.

Whatever you do, and whatever you chose all that I or any other Linux user ask is that you keep an open mind and try to keep any bias's for any system you have in reserve until you have really tried Linux. Kinda like driving a car, you can't really judge the car until you get it on the freeway and in the corners, it may just be a pleasant surprise for you!
