Hi, Valrock!

There are a lot of ways to learn about Linux, but the best is to give it a try. Because of the way Linux is built, it's possible to try it without touching your computer's hard disk, using what is sometimes called a "Live CD," a copy of Linux which runs entirely from your computer's CD or DVD drive. Linux Live CDs typically include a large number of useful applications: internet and email access, office suites, graphics programs, games and more, so you can see how Linux might work for you. A large number of Live CD versions are available (most of them for free if you or a friend have the ability to "burn" CD images) at:

The live CD versions usually aren't set up to run your old programs, though many versions of Linux can run DOS, Mac and Windows programs, among others, but you will also want to consider the possibility of adopting native Linux programs, many of which can handle the same documents and functions as the software on those old disks of yours, and most of which are free.
