There's a solution to getting the stuff off permanently.
I've had to clean this 'stuff' off the kids' pc and the pc's of a number of friends. I also have accepted spyware once or twice to get something I wanted, and the author used the spyware to fund distribution.
Wish some philanthropist would start up gooddownloads.com, with free, worthwhile programs and no spyware.

Adaware works, but not always the first time.

The 'stuff' hides in system restores, most recent programs, a bunch of other places. Sometimes it's the program itself, sometimes the executables.

When you have a mess to get rid of, keep running Adaware with both the Smart Sweep and the full sweep (which has to be programmed using info from the site, www.lavasoft.de) until it comes out clean twice.
That means two separate, complete sweeps followed by a restart. Don't overlook the restart. And don't test by waiting to see whether you're getting popups, etc. Know the processes for the 'crap' you've spotted and look for them in the active process list.
Then do it again a day later, just to make sure.

Time consuming, aggravating, but possible.
