1) BSD can run all of the desktop apps that Linux does. In fact, at the application level they're pretty much interchangable.

However, you forgot the things that BSD /doesn't/ have that Linux does, such as multiprocessor capability, hardware support, clustering, and other low-level facilities. Oh, and Linux' kernel scheduler pretty much beats everything out there for efficiently managing heavy loads.

Since these are the core business of the kernel, it's pretty silly to compare the userspace programs that get built on top.
