When Rome fell
Historians trace the root causes of the Fall of Rome back to events that happened when Rome's strength was at its height. It was long after Rome began weakening itself that Hanible, the Goths, and the Visigoths could come in hand the Romans their lunch.

Since those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it, we now see MS using WPA to create disgruntled end users just as this little thing called Linux is starting to become viable. As if that weren't enough, they decide to increase licensing costs to companies by 65 - 105%. Then they create this major new OS that will revolutionize the world.

Now, I have no idea what the quality of Longhorn will be, but I can tell you that the implementation of it looks to be at least as big an impact on my enterprise as Linux would be. Apps will need to be rewritten, the AD structure looks to be impacted in a major way, and the training necessary for my admins is going to cost me a bundle. In addition, the lockin potential of this kind of MS solution is something I will not put up with from EMC, IBM, or anyone else, so why should I put up with it from MS? Especially since they have spent the last five years (at least) looking for ways to make me angry?

At the end of the day, there are a lot of people like me. People who used to be NBMers and now prefer to find a different answer if possible. We are not this way because of disloyalty. We are not this way because we just like the next cool thing. We are this way because MS took our loyalty for granted, abused us to maintain its market position, and then charged us extra money for the pleasure. When MS falls, and it will someday, historians will write that the real reasons for the demise of Microsoft were internal decay, not Linux,BSD, GNU, GPL, or anything else.
