I agree it's a challenge
I agree that the profit tie-in is not obvious. I was thinking that if they went with "print" advertising, like they do on Google searches, it wouldn't work out so well, because it's difficult to link all sorts of sellers with relevance to what people are watching. I don't see that the relevance model works that well.

What I do see as a possibly viable model is for Google to do what Yahoo and Microsoft have done with Yahoo Music and MSN Video. They integrate TV-like advertising, like from a soda company, a car company, or an insurance company, in with viewing videos. You watch some video, then you see an ad you can't skip, then you see more video. It recapitulates the TV advertising model. I do wonder whether bringing that into it would kill the "cool" factor of YouTube. I like YouTube, as a user of the service. As I was thinking about it now I had the thought that it's been nice NOT to see ads in with the videos. It feels more like video on demand that way. I don't have to sit through a commercial I'm not interested in to see what I want. The content might make it worth it though. Google Video and MSN Video don't have it the way YouTube does.
