Not sure if YouTube has to do the work to find all copies or if they just have to take down specific copies they receive notice on. I would assume it's the latter.

The idea is that if I have a website hosted by Verizon and I put up the text of a copyrighted book or mp3 files of copyrighted songs, Verizon is not responsible for my actions. And because Verizon hosts millions of websites, they can't be asked to police the content on every single one of those websites.

The obvious catch here is a site like YouTube, which features tons of copyrighted material. If they're given the same status under the DMCA, then they're perfectly within their legal rights doing what they're currently doing.

Just more evidence that the DMCA is one of the worst-written, poorest thought-out laws ever passed.
