- Sinking Ship?
-
What indicates a sinking ship? A 52 week high in stock price ??
Consider pre-merger, HP had a great imaging business, strong software (Openview) and a decent midrange (HP-UX) business.
Compaq had reasonable client sales, and unmatched x86 server business (ProLiant), and a sorry mid-range story (Alpha) and Services business both inherited for Digital (which also strengthened their mid-range Storage - EVA.)
Combined, they are stronger in portfolio than they were separate. IBM spun off client biz to Lenovo, Dell's model has clearly hit its peak and is starting to tank. Sun is off trying to "monetize" Solaris 10 against the juggernaut of Linux. Their "Blades" are an industry punchline.
What exactly would you propose to spin off ??
Every article I have read from major customers show they care little or not at all about this "scandal." IMO, this has more to do with the unscrupulous tactics employed by outsourced security investigators, and the ineffectiveness of the phone companies to guard their customer's records in any meaningful way.
Then the PRESS who feel somehow slighted because a company is trying to reduce their abilities to get "scoops" through disreputable measures (looking for leaks) is blowing the whole thing out of proportion.
Add a power-hungry DA in an election year, and you have a "tempest in a teapot" turned into a "perfect storm."
As long as customers keep buying and Wall Street is happy with earnings, the whole board and Executive staff can be indicted without material affecting the way the company performs as it stands now. - Posted by: JackPastor Posted on: 10/05/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
