I don't think any reasonable American in 2006 could believe that phone RECORDS were publicly available data. Granted, there is not a lot of privacy left, but if HIPAA has worked so well in Health-care, there is no reason similar legislation should not apply to telecommunications, or any other industry which holds confidential information about individuals.

Where is the accountability on the parts of the Phone companies who gave up this information without a real challenge. I can't get my BANK to send me a statement without my mother's maiden name, first pet, and hometown newspaper !
