About proof-reading and journalists
No, not everyone needs to be a lawyer to comment on the Internet (perish the thought). However, I must point out that the individual in question is a professional journalist. It is their JOB to be well-qualified, even "expert" in all aspects of using the English language.

They should have known better, because it's their job to do so.
