think enterprise not desktop ... its bigger than a lan
...a narrow range of applications like Windows is useful for....

Can you expand on this please?

OK, here we go. Why did MS come out with a version of Windows for HP mainframe class machines? If Windows is just fine as it is they should have ignored the big iron and focused on making the little stuff work as promised. Obviously they put big dollars into moving Windows beyond desktop and lan server applications becasue the see a market for it. If you want to be successful in the big iron market it can't hurt to have the #1 seller of 64-bit HW and #1 seller of 64-bit OS on your side. Look it up, Sun rules the 64-bit world with over 50% market share. Not a bad partner to have if you want to move out of the lan server market into the glass house. Solaris has lots of worldclass features which MS would be much smarter to license than try to copy. Remember ... Sun assumed CRAY's Super computer technology just before broke into the data center market with its big iron solutions.

...to click 5,000 checkboxes...

Not difficult if you use the 'Select All' option.

Say you want to click that same box on 5,000 machines scattered around the globe, but not the other 15,000 machines along side them. Sun is light years further along in the network/systems management life cycle vs. Microsoft. Why should MS copy Sun's vision if it can outsource the management problem to Sun, and have its guys focus on the desktop and server OS & applications where their proven skills are?

This is a win/win for both if they play well. Its just a memory on their way out the door if they stall because the Penguin in the mirror is coming fast. Let's say MS wanted Sun to back off on developing OO, why not license them Office for Solaris/Linux?

A match made in heaven or hell ... we have to wait and see!
