You get what you pay for ...
Have you considered a scanner than cost $800 five years ago costs $200 this year (with much better specs?) Five years ago, you couldn't get a photo printer for less than $100 !

Also, try going to HP's website and look as some of the high-end servers and storage systems they make.

HP is not just in the consumer goods market. The products that cost $100K on up are still better-made than those of competitors in that segment of the market.

I'm not defending HP in particular here, but any company trying to make a go in consumer goods is outsourcing manufacturing to Asia, and selling cheap goods with short warranties.

If you want high-quality products, you can still buy enterprise-class models from Lenovo, Dell, HP and others. I'm willing to bet you would not want to pay the price necessary to purchase that category of equipment.
