I agree entirely with what you are saying; personally I think that Compaq products were far better before the merger. Though the same can be said for companies like EScom or AST who unfortunatly went bust as they weren't bought out.
HP seem to be entirely happy as long as they make the customer think the price tag is "good value." Incredibly you can get better kit for a LOWER price with some of the Far east companies like Mitac.
No private consumer thinks Mitac would be a good brand initally cause their not famous and spend little on PR. Though it turns out that they have been going for years offering products to the specialist sector like making ruggedised notebooks for geologists etc.
