Showed up in "Simon and Simon" (set in my adopted home town of San Diego) as well. One would get the impression from watching TV detective shows that pretexting is a widespread and necessary (if somewhat disreputable) investigative practice. Have no idea how much pretexting is done in the real world, but it is definitely identity theft (even if only temporary).
