Don't worry. SGI will do what Apple did: Leech into Linux.
Big deal. It's open source, volunteers do all the real work. Less costly than having a bunch of folks who know Irix in and out; and people they bring in won't be paid nearly as much; generalized products ensure nobody is indispensible.

Not to be too cynical, of course; it's nice to see support extended through 2013. That's genuinely decent and noble and gives their user base time to move elsewhere.
